Viola Desmond (1914–1965) was a Black Canadian businesswoman and civil rights activist from Nova Scotia. In 1946, she challenged racial segregation by refusing to leave a "whites-only" section of the Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow. Her act of defiance predated the famous Rosa Parks protest by nine years and became a catalyst for the modern civil rights movement in Canada.
: Organizations like KCR Community have recently released video segments (such as "Madison Instagram 2025 (5).mp4") specifically to educate the public on the history of anti-Black racism in Canada using her story as a cornerstone. Technical File Context Viola (5) mp4
