Swallowing: Mature

, also known as the somatic swallow , is a complex, pressure-driven process where food and liquids are transported from the oral cavity to the stomach while simultaneously protecting the airway. This pattern typically develops between the ages of 2 and 4 years , replacing the reflexive "infantile" or "visceral" swallow used during breastfeeding and bottle-feeding.
