The 1996 Czech film is a poignant, Academy Award-winning drama set in the final days of Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia. The story follows Franta Louka, a middle-aged concert cellist who has fallen from grace with the state orchestra and now survives by playing at funerals and painting tombstones. To pay off his debts, he agrees to a sham marriage with a Russian woman so she can obtain Czech papers. However, the plan goes awry when she flees to West Germany, leaving Louka to care for her five-year-old son, Kolya.
