Leonardo used these pages to think on paper. Many of the sketches found within the Codex were centuries ahead of their time, serving as the conceptual ancestors to modern technology:

The name "Atlanticus" has nothing to do with the ocean. It refers to the (format atlantico ) used by the 16th-century sculptor Pompeo Leoni to preserve and mount Leonardo’s scattered notes.
